Shatranj: Mughal Exploration (01)

I've posted more information on the process in the blog section):

Shatranj has been a project of mine for almost two years now, which means that it's gone through more iterations than I can count. If you've followed my account for a while, you'll remember that I've posted and removed many of these explorations.

India has been notoriously secretive about its history and part of the fun of working on this has been trying to uncover it. Additionally, this also left a ton of room for interpretation; and so I've battled with the authenticity of what I was producing on more than one occasion. After all, India is where I come from -- where so much of my identity is founded -- and so I want to do it justice while keeping the output visually interesting.

The images below are the most recent of explorations (in no particular order) concerning the style and shape language of the Mughals (Post Akbar era: after 1600)
